What's Lipoderma?
A new cadaveric fat-based injectable arrives on the scene
Savvy readers, have you heard of the injectable Lipoderma (not to be confused with the medical condition lipedema)? I hadn’t either, until very recently.
Touted as a nonsurgical alternative to traditional fat grafting, Lipoderma is an adipose tissue allograft—a sort of filler made from processed human donor fat.
If the concept sounds familiar, that’s probably because Lipoderma (from the biotech company Britecyte in collaboration with LifeLink Tissue Bank) is similar to the much-talked-about alloClae, barring a few key differences. Lipoderma, for example, can be used to treat the face as well as the body while alloClae, with its more robust consistency, is intended only for the body.
I first heard about Lipoderma from Carey Campbell, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon, who recently left her Memphis practice to join StarkMD Plastic Surgery and Aesthetic Center in Bryn Mawr, PA. An early adopter of Lipoderma, Dr. Campbell reserves the product for her leanest patients, who objectively need volume, but have little to no fat of their own to spare.
